What Is a Fundus Examination?
A fundus exam (also known as retinal examination) involves inspecting the internal structures at the back of your eye. This can be done with specialised instruments or digital fundus photography.
Diabetic retinopathy
Damage to the tiny blood vessels in the retina caused by diabetes. It often develops silently and can lead to vision loss if not detected early.
Hypertensive retinopathy
Changes in the retinal blood vessels due to high blood pressure. These changes can signal cardiovascular risks and may affect your vision.
Glaucoma
A condition where increased eye pressure damages the optic nerve. It usually has no early symptoms and can cause permanent vision loss.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
A disease affecting the central part of the retina (macula), leading to blurred or distorted central vision, especially in older adults.
Retinal tears or detachment
Tears in the retina that can lead to the retina peeling away from the back of the eye. This is an emergency and can cause sudden vision loss.
Optic nerve problems
Conditions such as optic neuropathy or inflammation that affect how signals are sent from the eye to the brain, resulting in reduced or distorted vision.
Many of these conditions do not cause symptoms in the early stages which is why regular screening is important.
Spot eye diseases before you get older
Check the health of your blood vessels
Detect diabetic or high blood pressure complications
Prevent sudden vision loss from early symptoms
Who Should Get a Fundus Exam?
If you’re unsure whether you need a fundus examination, it’s always best to ask your doctor. It’s strongly recommended for:
- People with diabetes
- Individuals with high blood pressure
- Those experiencing blurred or distorted vision
- People above age 40
- Individuals with a family history of glaucoma or retinal disease
- Anyone who has sudden vision changes, floaters, or flashes
- Patients undergoing routine health screening
What to Expect During the Fundus Examination
Staff will record medical history, medications, and any vision symptoms you may have noticed, such as blurred vision, floaters, or flashes of light.
In many cases, your doctor will use dilating eye drops to widen your pupils, allowing a clearer view of the retina for any physical abnormalities.
Once your eyes are ready, the doctor will either use a fundus camera to examine your retina. These high-res images are used to detect signs of retinal problems.
After the imaging, your doctor will review the results with you. They’ll explain what the images show and highlight any areas of concern.
At the end of your appointment, you’ll receive personalised advice on follow-up care. Depending on your risk factors and examination findings, the doctor may recommend repeat screening in six months to a year, or immediate treatment if an issue is detected. They may also provide tips for eye health, such as blood sugar management, blood pressure control, or protective eyewear.
