Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS)
A Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS) is an advanced imaging procedure used to get a closer and clearer look at a woman’s reproductive organs including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and pelvic area, helping detect even small abnormalities.
At U.n.i Klinik Sri Sendayan, we use the latest ultrasound technology to provide accurate and comfortable TVS scans in a private, hygienic, and supportive environment.
Patients can benefit if they have known conditions like PCOS or fibroids. In some cases, your doctor may also use a TVS scan to guide minor procedures or confirm the effectiveness of ongoing treatments.
Why a TVS Scan is Important
A TVS scan is often recommended when you’re experiencing pelvic pain, irregular periods, or abnormal vaginal bleeding, or as part of fertility or pregnancy assessments. Some of the most common reasons your doctor might suggest a TVS scan include:
Irregular menstrual cycles
To check if hormonal changes or uterine growths are affecting your cycle.
Pelvic pain or cramping
To identify possible causes such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, or infections.
Unexplained vaginal bleeding
To rule out endometrial abnormalities, polyps, or early signs of uterine disorders.
Fertility concerns
To assess the condition of your ovaries and monitor egg follicle development during ovulation.
What a TVS Scan Can Detect
A Transvaginal Ultrasound gives doctors a clear, detailed picture of your pelvic organs, allowing early detection of many common gynaecological conditions.
Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or within the ovaries. Some can cause symptoms such as pelvic pain, bloating, or irregular periods. A TVS scan helps determine the size, type, and nature of the cyst, whether it’s simple, complex, or persistent.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a hormonal condition where multiple small cysts develop on the ovaries. It often comes with irregular menstruation, acne, hair growth, and fertility challenges. Through TVS, doctors can identify PCOS.
Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that form in or around the uterus. Depending on size and location, they can cause heavy periods, pelvic pain, and pressure on the bladder or bowel. TVS helps locate and measure fibroids accurately, guiding treatment options.
Uterine Polyps
Polyps are small growths on the iner uterine lining that can lead to abnormal bleeding, spotting, or fertility issues. A TVS scan can detect polyps and assess their size and number.
Endometrial Abnormalities
The endometrial lining changes throughout your cycle. If the lining appears unusually thick, it may suggest an imbalance of hormones, endometrial hyperplasia, or in some cases, early uterine cancer.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
PID occurs when infection spreads to the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries. A TVS scan can show signs of inflammation, fluid accumulation, or abscesses, helping identify the infection early.

What to Expect During Your Appointment
A transvaginal ultrasound is a quick, safe, and non-invasive procedure that usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
You’ll be asked to empty your bladder before the scan, as a full bladder can interfere with image clarity.
You’ll lie comfortably on the examination table, similar to how you would during a pelvic exam.
The sonographer will insert a slim ultrasound probe into the vagina. The probe emits sound waves that create real-time images on the monitor.
Once completed, your doctor will analyze the images and explain what they show. Most patients find the procedure only mildly uncomfortable, and it should not be painful. The scan does not use radiation and is completely safe.
How to Prepare for Your TVS Scan
Preparation for a transvaginal scan is simple:
- Empty your bladder before the procedure.
- Avoid using vaginal creams on the day of your appointment.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing to make the process easier.
If you have your menstrual period, the scan can still be performed unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Inform your doctor if you’re pregnant or suspect pregnancy, as this may affect how the scan is performed.

For women who have not been sexually active, a transabdominal ultrasound is usually recommended instead. Your doctor will discuss the most appropriate and comfortable imaging option for your situation.
Results are typically available immediately after the scan or within the same visit. Your doctor will review the images and explain the findings, along with any next steps if needed.
