What is a Pap Smear?
A Pap smear test, also known as a ujian Pap smear, is a crucial screening procedure designed to detect abnormal cells in the cervix, including pre-cancerous conditions that could lead to cervical cancer.
It is a simple, routine test that plays a key role in the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer, offering peace of mind and promoting overall reproductive health.
Preventing HPV and Cervical Cancer with Pap Smears
Pap smears are a vital tool in the prevention of cervical cancer, offering early detection and intervention. By regularly screening for abnormal cells in the cervix, Pap smears help identify potential issues before they develop into more serious conditions.
This proactive approach is crucial in managing and preventing the progression of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, which are a leading cause of cervical cancer.
When to Get a Pap Smear Screening
It is recommended for women to get a Pap smear screening as soon as they are 21 or become sexually active. Though some may postpone getting the test done until they face abnormal symptoms with their period. A Pap smear will be done alongside their cervical exam and gynecological appointment to cover all bases.
As cervical cancer progresses, it may present the following symptoms —
Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding: This includes bleeding between periods, after intercourse, or post-menopause.
Unusual Vaginal Discharge: Discharge that is watery, pink, or has a strong odor can be a sign of cervical cancer.
Pelvic Pain: Persistent pain or discomfort in the pelvic region that is not related to your menstrual cycle.
Blood in Urine: Advanced cases may cause changes in urinary habits, like peeing more frequently or blood in the urine.
It’s important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, so experiencing them doesn’t necessarily mean you have cervical cancer. Regular Pap smear screenings and consultations with a doctor can help with accurate diagnosis.
HPV Vaccination
While you’re attending your appointment, you can also arrange for a HPV vaccination. The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective immunization that targets several strains of HPV, including those most linked to cervical cancer (such as HPV types 16 and 18) and genital warts (like HPV types 6 and 11). The vaccine helps the immune system recognize and fight the virus, preventing future infections. Additionally, it also protects against cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus, and throat.
What to Expect During Your Pap Smear Procedure
You will be asked to lie on an examination table with your legs placed in stirrups. A healthcare provider will gently insert a speculum into the vagina to access the cervix.
A small brush or spatula is used to collect cells from the surface of the cervix. This process is quick and usually causes minimal discomfort.
The collected cells are sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results will indicate whether any abnormal cells are present and help determine the next steps if necessary.
If your Pap smear results are abnormal, your healthcare provider may recommend additional tests, such as a colposcopy, to examine the cervix more closely. Depending on the findings, treatment options may be discussed to address any detected issues.

If your results are abnormal, your healthcare provider will discuss the next steps, which may include additional testing, such as a colposcopy, to further examine the cervical cells and determine the appropriate treatment.
Pap smears are specifically designed to detect abnormalities in the cervix. They do not screen for other types of cancer, such as ovarian or uterine cancer. However, you can ask your doctor about your concerns.
